There are a number of different factors used to determine whether alimony (referred to as spousal support) should be considered. Length of marriage, difference in income, education of parties, special needs of the parties, earning potential and history, fault and other factors are all considered. You will need to provide more information to determine the likelihood that spousal support would be ordered. I can tell you, however, that a three year marriage would be considered short term and would make an award of spousal support less likely. The other factors could make an award more likely. I can give you a detailed assessment of whether or not alimony is likely in your case and how an award of alimony might be limited in amount or duration. Do not go into a divorce guessing on this issue. Careful planning can make all of the difference.
