Answer: There are a number of different factors used to determine
how much the child support obligation will be. First and foremost are
are the incomes of the parties and the number of overnights that the
children will spend with each parent over the year. Other factors are
the amount paid for day care (if a child is under 12 years old) and the
amount of money paid for health insurance for the minor children. In
Michigan the Courts are required to following the Michigan Child
Support Guidelines to determine the amount of support being paid
unless the parties agree to deviate from the formula and can tell the
Court why the deviation is in the best interests of the children. I can
